Police and Public Safety

In short I believe that the Irvine Police Department (IPD) is operating at at least a serviceable level at the moment. What I would like to see is some oversight to ensure that police spending is going to the right places. Once we’ve done some oversight here’s what I would like to do:

  • Fund racial sensitivity training. IPD officers already (unless I am mistaken) have to have a bachelor’s degree to become an officer, which is a good step for training. But I am of the opinion that we should do everything in our power to increase the trust between our citizens and our police without neglecting our past history.
  • Reallocate funding, when necessary. In general I think that our police is being funded at the adequate level to serve the citizens of Irvine. However, if our oversight finds that the police department is not efficiently or is overspending, then I would be in favor of reallocating this funding to other programs that could benefit our public safety, like mental health programs.
  • Increase funding to mental health programs in Irvine. We should increase funding to social programs, social workers, and mental health workers in Irvine in order to help combat the growing mental health epidemic that we’re facing, doubly so because of COVID. I would be greatly in favor of having social workers ride along with police officers when they’re called out to situations in which a social worker would be helpful, like a domestic violence incident.
